Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. is recalling 12 generic drugs to consumers who took the drugs on Friday. The products included in the recall included the painkiller naproxen, the painkiller acetaminophen and the anti-inflammatory drug naprosyn.
has received FDA approval for the non-prescription versions of the products that contain the ingredients naproxen, naproxen sodium and ibuprofen.
The Food and Drug Administration said the affected drugs were recalled because they contained less than 0.05 percent of the active ingredient in naproxen.
The FDA said the products are being recalled, and the agency warned consumers that the drugs could be associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke, a rare condition that could increase the risk of death and disability if left untreated.
The affected products are available for purchase in the U. S. at pharmacies.
A spokesman for Pfizer said he was "not at a loss" as to what action the company will take to address the issue.
"The FDA is reviewing the data we obtained with the products and will provide additional information as it becomes available," spokesman Eric Schulz said. "Our immediate goal is to get as much information as possible out there as we can.
"The information that we obtained with the products is very important, and we will take action as needed. We are committed to doing so. We're doing our best to work with the FDA to make sure that we do our level of good."
The recall was based on a survey conducted by Pfizer Inc. which was conducted between April 12 and 16. A total of 5,200 people were involved in the survey. The survey included 18,600 adults and 6,000 children.
